“It feels like the end of the world,” Rosie O’Donnell shared with Allison Josephs on the latest episode of Rosie’s podcast, Onward. While she was speaking generally about the war, so many of us are experiencing a similar sentiment. If you’ve always worried about something terrible happening to the Jews, it feels like the shoe has dropped. It’s eerie to walk around right now, to read news stories of antisemitic incidents going on in our current, very real lives.
O’Donnell brought Josephs on to speak about the war and time we’re in from the Jewish perspective. The two connected over Instagram a couple years ago and spoke for an hour about Josephs’ journey connecting more with Judaism, a.k.a. the process of becoming a baal teshuva. Josephs spoke about why this time is so difficult for Jews, how so many of us have been told for years not to get too comfortable, as Jews notoriously in history have always had to be on the run.
She and Rosie went back and forth on the war and all of the news around it. O’Donnell, a self-proclaimed pacifist, is against any and all war. Josephs explained the necessity of this one and how the goal isn’t to kill any civilians but rather to eradicate evil and prevent any sort of barbaric murder from happening to Israel and the Jewish people again. The goal is to get civilians out so Israel can do its job of eliminating Hamas and Hamas only, so Israel can finally live in peace and doesn’t need a fence to protect its people.
If you’re sitting there confused about what to say to those arguing against you, this podcast will help you become both more informed and more empowered as discussions continue.

You do hard things Allison! Power to you 🙂
When I heard you talking about, “how would I have fared in the holocaust” some thing clicked in my brain. I though, “oh, THAT’S why I felt I had to give birth at least once without an epidural”. At the time when people asked me why i bothered, i wasnt sure. I said, i need to know i can do it without- what if im stuck once in a forest? As if!!
I definitely grew up as a second generation holocaust survivor and, after your talk, I can more clearly see where this was coming from.
Kol Hakavod to you, Allison! While I had to fight the urge to throw my laptop against the wall out of frustration, as I listened to Rosie, you kept your cool and presented the Israeli side do knowledgeably, capably and eloquently. Rosie, on the other hand, represented the skewed views of the “socially conscious” left, who as we used to say, try to be so open minded that their brains fall out. She is living in la la land, while you had a steady handle on the situation. Hats off to you as you present our views so ably to the crazy world out there!
Allison:
I am listening to your interview with Rosie O’Donnell. Your expressing how Jews feel is perfect. When I ran marathons and my body would start breaking down, I would think, how did my father survive the death march to Dachau. If my father survived, I will complete this marathon.
I liked your responses. You brought up the most important points about this conflict. What I was thinking the whole second half of the talk is how can a person claim that her friend’s relatives and friends are committing a genocide and then be offended that they call her antisemitic?
Allison, I felt and shared your frustration as you and Rosie (whom I love) discussed the terrorists and Israel’s response, yet she seemed only to parrot the talking points of those who either know nothing about the larger context if this issue, have not looked into this beyond what “social media” feeds them, or those who are actively working to promote ham*s’s lies. She did not address your points other than to toss out ideas that have been used since October 7 to minimize the horror and pivot to sympathy for “all those poor women and children” in Gaza—y’know, the ones who *weren’t* tortured and murdered with joyous zeal on GoPro feeds.
Moreover, though pacifism is a lovely concept, we don’t have the privilege of living by this idealistic concept as decidedly non-pacifists call for our end, worldwide. She offered no alternate way Israel could act while condemning its self-defense.
To paraphrase what you said, we will not apologize for refusing to be eliminated, Never Again.
