Shabbos Mode Gains Notice in the Wall Street Journal

A new kind of phone call has been coming in to General Electric’s technical support: those of people who have inadvertently and unknowingly activated their oven’s Sabbath Mode. This handy feature, designed to help observant Jews keep religious laws, might be confusing to users of other faiths when they encounter it, but it is a game-changer for those who keep Jewish law. The feature is now available in approximately 85% of built-in ranges and almost 66% of wall ovens. Overall, about 33% of all major appliances (including dishwashers) also feature this innovation, which was developed in the late 1990s. With the ability to warm food without overheating or shutting off, Sabbath Mode is a mainstay of any Orthodox Jewish household with such an equipped appliance on Shabbos and Holidays. One such inadvertent user said that he wishes the oven would sound a warning by playing guitar licks from Black Sabbath. Read more here.
